Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir announced that the Egyptian National Railway Authority (ENR) will begin collecting foreigners’ train ticket prices in US dollars and euros in January 2023.
He went on to say that the bank would be closely monitored by Egypt’s Central Bank.
He also stated that the Transportation Ministry’s dealings with US dollars contribute to the provision of foreign hard currency.
This will prevent tourists from exchanging US dollars on the black market, whether in euros or US dollars.
That is not the real reason, according to Egyptian economists, because the Egyptian pound continues to lose value against foreign currencies as a result of the regime’s financial decisions over the last year.
According to the minister, the Transport Ministry will use the foreign proceeds from ticket sales to pay the value of contracts for trains signed recently abroad.
Wazir stated that the ministry is working to reduce the Central Bank of Egypt’s financial burdens, particularly in hard currency.
In other news, Wazir stated that there has been a high demand for sleeping trains and their reservations in US dollars and euros in recent months.
He stated that in the last few days, 1023 people paid the value of train tickets in hard currency.
